‘I would love to be known as a diva later on in life when I’ve had far more experiences,’ once said the multi-talented star, Deborah Cox, modestly. Deborah Cox is certainly nothing less than a diva. The 40 year old has a thriving career in singing, songwriting, and acting.

With a total net worth of $6 million, Deborah is among the rich stars today. Winner of a total of 3 JUNO within first 5 years of her career, Cox is a well known singer of the R&B genre. She also triumphed over dance and jazz. Her record boasts a total of 11 hit songs and 6 successful music albums in 20 years of music career. The multiplatinum entertainer also owns her own independent label –deco recording group. However all greatness is backed with years of hard work and Deborah was no exception.

Cox commenced her career as a playback singer for TV commercials at the young age of 12. With a resolve to move forward in the field of music she also participated in a number of talent shows. As a teenager, Cox is known to have performed in night clubs and it is around this time that she started writing songs too. At the age of 22, Cox was already performing as a backup vocalist for the famous Celine Dion. She later worked towards recording her own album. However, the road to success is not effortless, she was rejected a number of times by the Canadian record labels.

Determined to reach her dreams Deborah Cox moved to Los Angeles with her college sweetheart, Lascelles Stephen. Stephen was also her producer and songwriting partner back then. Just a year later for Cox released her very first album, “Deborah Cox.” The album was well received and won for the JUNO award for best R&B in 1996. She was also nominated favorite new artist for the genre by the American music awards.

It was in 1998 that Deborah broke records and reached stardom with her album, One Wish. One Wish has been her biggest selling album till date, the first single from the music album stayed No.1 on the hot R&B charts in USA for 14 weeks. It stayed 2nd on the billboard hot 100 for 8 weeks. She later released her albums, The Morning After, in 2002, Destination Moon, in 2006, and The Promise, in 2008.

Cox widened her scope, after the release of her third album, with her Broadway debut as the lead in the musical ‘Aida’. Cox has provided vocals for numerous well known movies and has been cast in a few movies too. In 2008, after the release of, Destination Moon, she starred in, A Good Man is Hard To Find, alongside Brooks and McCrary. Her performance as the lead actress, Lucy, in a revival of the musical, Jekyll & Hyde has been commended. Cox is currently working on Whitney Houston’s biopic, Whitney, for which, she is providing the vocals. In an interview with SGN, Cox has said, I pride myself in being able to do it all, I challenge myself to be able to do it all. I am a vocalist, storyteller, and an entertainer. She can absolutely do it all and very effectively too.

Cox currently lives in Miami, Florida. She is married to Lascelles Stephens. They have three children: son Isaiah, and two daughters; Sumayah and Kaila Michelle.
