Known internationally for her representation of Anne Shirley in the Canadian television film, “Anne of Green Gables” and its sequels, Megan Elizabeth Laura Diana Follows was born on March 14, 1968 in Toronto, Ontario to Ted Follows and Dawn Greenhalgh. Follows and her siblings started acting when they were toddlers given that both of their parents were in the entertainment business. Soon after her parents’ divorce, Follows moved to Los Angeles.

Megan Follows’s acting career started at the age of 9 when she was offered to do a commercial for Bell Canada. Funnily, she was asked to make a rude gesture like sticking out her tongue, but instead of that, she made a rather obscene gesture which shocked everyone. She then appeared in a few more television series including, “Matt and Jenny” and “The Baxters”. She also guest starred with her whole family in “The Littlest Hobo”. However, her big moment in television came in 1979 when she was offered to be a part of the popular television show, “The Facts of Life”.

In 1983, she was part of the movie, “Boys and Girls” which earned itself an Academy Award for “Best Short Subject”. 1985 proved to be the defining year of her career when out of 3000 other girls, Megan Follows was chosen to act as “Anne Shirley” in Kevin Sullivan’s movie, “Anne of Green Gables”, despite the concern that she might look too old for the role. The movie and its sequels, were made in Canada, and quickly gained popularity around the world, garnering the highest rating in Canada. For her work in “Anne of Green Gables” and “Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel”, Follows received two Gemini Awards for “Best Actress”, respectively. For the third part, “Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story”, she received a Gemini nomination. However, Follow was not included in the cast for the fourth film, “Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning” when the part was given to Barbara Hershey. Nevertheless, Follows is still remembered fondly for her work in the series.

After this, she decided to make the transition from television to theatre and in 1988 she appeared in the production of “The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds”, along with her mother and sister. In 1993, she was offered the role of Juliet in Shakespeare’s play, “Romeo and Juliet” at Stratford Festival. Some of her other work on stage include performances in plays such as; “Othello”, “A Doll’s House” and “Uncle Vanya”.

Follows has also been a part of feature films such as “Silver Bullet” released in 1985, in which she starred against Corey Haim and Gary Busey. Other movies include, “Christmas Child” and “Breakfast with Scot”. Alongside this, she has appeared in several American television series such as; “Second Chances”, “Law & Order”, “The X Files”, “Cold Case”, “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and “Lie to Me”. Some of her more recent appearances in television were in shows like, “House” in 2011, “Hollywood Heights” in 2012 and “Reign” in 2013.

Aside from her work as an actress, Megan Follows is deeply involved in humanitarian work. She was made the spokeswoman for World Vision Canada and has been to places like Rwanda and Tanzania serving as a photographer and spokesperson. In her personal life, she was married to Christopher Porter but the couple got divorced. She has two children named Lyla Anne Porter and Russell Porter.
