Drake

While Switzerland may boast about her beautiful landscapes and breathtaking sceneries, Canada boasts about her talented artists who have earned name and fame around the world. The film and music industry is filled with Canadian gems who have awe-inspired the audiences with their impeccable talents. One of such rare gems is Canadian rapper Drake.

Drake was born on October 24, 1986 in Toronto, Ontario. He was christened Aubrey Drake Graham. Born to the drummer, Dennis Graham, Drake had music in his bones. Unfortunately, Drake couldn’t remain in the shadow of his father for long as his parents divorced when he was only 5 years old and Drake moved with his mother in Forest Hill, an affluent and predominately Jewish Toronto neighborhood. Living with his mother, Drake was raised as a Jewish. Being black and Jewish is a rare combination and that’s why probably Drake is said to be world’s only black Jewish-Canadian rap star. For Drake, such uniqueness was not a hindrance. Granted, Drake had hard time in adjusting with his fellow mates but he has reportedly admitted that such uniqueness made him stronger and he had the strength needed to survive in the career he had chosen.

Drake began his career as an actor. One of his classmate’s father was an agent who once told his son to bring in any boy from the school, who’d make him laugh, for audition. Drake’s classmate told his father about him. After Drake auditioned, the kid’s father became Drake’s agent. Thereby, in 2001, Drake was starred in a Canadian teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation. The series focused on the lives of a group of teenagers in Degrassi High School. Drake portrayed the role of a wheelchair bound former basketball star Jimmy Brooks. Drake earned a Young Artist Award in 2002 for his remarkable portrayal of Jimmy Brooks. Drake was widely recognized in Canada for his acting skills.

While acting in Degrassi, Drake didn’t quench his passion for music. He recorded his first hip-hop mixtape, Room for Improvement, and released it in the year 2006. The tape had a decent sale of 6,000 copies. In the following year, 2007, Drake released another mixtape, Comeback Season. Comeback Season’s single, Replacement Girl became Drake first hit.

Drake’s hip-hop career was not on the steady path yet when Degrassi’s producer decided to cut Drake’s role from the show. Dejected, Drake had to look for some day jobs to make his both ends meet. Right on time, karma kicked in, and Drake received an unexpected call from Lil Wayne, America’s rap star. Drake was asked to accompany Lil Wayne in his tour. This short call unlocked gates of success for Drake. After touring and recording with Lil Wayne, Drake released his third mixtape, So Far Gone. Drake had his fair share of acclaim and success when the single, Best I Ever Had, soared at No. 2 on charts. Other notable singles from the tape included, Forever, Every Girl, and Money to Blow.

In 2010, Drake’s first studio album, Thank Me Later, topped at the album charts of America and Canada and has been since certified platinum. In the following year, 2011, Drake released his second studio album, Take Care, which won him a Grammy for the best rap album. The famous singles from the album included, Headlines, Make Me Proud, The Motto, and Take Care.

Drake has also been notoriously involved in a feud with fellow entertainer Chris Brown. In the recent years Drake and Brown have become rivals over the singer Rihanna. The clash between the stars erupted in violence during the summer in 2012 at New York nightclub. Although both entertainers have not been criminally charged, however, both of them have faced legal consequences as they have been sued by other notable personalities who were injured during the violence that broke out in the club.

Drake, however, has not let his personal obstacles tarnish his professional career. He is currently working on several projects. He is working hard and has admitted, ‘I just wanted to make it known that I did work really hard to get here and it wasn’t just a fluke and it wasn’t easy by any means’. May the stars of good luck be in Drake’s favor and Drake continues making remarkable music.
